The players didn't have eyes and only ear in every fifth system and we had to organize our fleets to counter the counter of the counter counter taskforce fleet, AND wi' no boosters active.
If we were lucky enough to find a plot thread, we had to blindfold ourselves and orbit the sun while the GMs spawned cloaked planets onto wormholes while spit-taking, then we had to pilot through Sansha's back garden where he'd turn us into a slave, work us down't pit for 5000 years, and then get back to our station (well, I say station, more like a gas cloud in a wolf rayet) where Dad would biomass us and feed us to t'fedos.
You were lucky to have stations, or at least gas clouds! When I was starting, we had to mine for seven months to afford a rookie ship and upon destruction, the insurance took money from your wallet. Clouds of gas! Those would have been luxury!
The only way to find out where the live event was, was to search for bookmarks from floating jet cans. The plot was every time to form a fleet to take down the counter force of a counter counter attack against the counter counter counter strike of pirates who had kidnapped the damsel. The event channel was announced on randomly generated out-of-game irc channels which changed every 15 minutes and only female avatars with xxx in their name were allowed to access it.
The locations of the events used to be more than 40 jumps in heavily camped null-sec, and in the destination, the acceleration gate didn't let you in unless you were flying a mining barge, fully trained in at least three seemingly random science skills, carrying a cow in the cargo bay, and had spent the last 8000 years as a captive on a Blood Raider Human Farm with nerve sticks in your eyes.
Inside, the devs were all waiting in 40-slot Jove ships and blew everyone up for good! All who participated lost 50% of their skill points, at least one alt got biomassed, your credit record was destroyed and dolphins broke into your home at night and chewed off your right arm.
Still, back then no one was complaining. It's a shame many pilots today don't seem to realize how easy they have it. |
